802.11ax - WiFi 6. Are you ready for the implementation?
WiFi 6 is simply the industry certification of the IEEE 802.11ax protocol, in other words, WiFi 6 is the marketing name given to
the technology by the WiFi alliance. Existing WiFi technology (802.11ac and before) is considered WiFi 5 technology, although it is never known by that name. One of the significant differences between WiFi 5 and WiFi 6 is that wireless frequencies on which they can operate, the 802.11ax protocol can take advantage of the 6GHz band.
It is estimated that IP traffic traversing WiFi networks will reach 1.2 Zettabytes by 2021, with 82% of it being IP video traffic. With a global embrace of IoT technology at the commercial and residential level, High-Density networks will become common. As technology evolves, the need for internet bandwidth increases, and most of that traffic will be traversing WiFi networks.
The benefits of WiFi 6 technology go beyond speed. However, a theoretical 11Gbps data rate sounds incredible; the performance is possible by the improvement and adoption of existing and new technology over previous WiFi standards, including Multi-User MIMO (MU-MIMO), meaning the AP can send and receive concurrently from multiple stations, the use of the 6GHz frequency band channel up 160MHz width, and improved power efficiency.
Currently, the networking field leaders are already manufacturing WiFi 6 enabled access points and the switches capable of handling the traffic.
